What you will do

Expand All
Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri village (Drive- 220 km, 8 Hours)

Sankri is a small village in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand which makes for the basecamp for many Himalayan treks including Bali Pass trek, Har ki Dun trek etc. The drive from Dehradun to Sankri is long but rewarding especially during the last stretch when the roads wind through dens pine forests which serve as a refreshing welcome into the higher altitudes of the region. Sankri is also a great spot for birdwatchers and this is one of the top things to do in Sankri when there!
At Sankri, we have an overnight halt in a homestay and prepare for the adventurous trek the following morning.

Day 2: Sankri to Juda-ka-Talab (2750 m, 4/5 Hours Trek)

The trek to Juda Ka Talab is 5 kilometres long and follows a gradual ascent. Trekking on this day is easy and along the way trekkers will cross beautiful pine forests and lush meadows. Just before the campsite, there are two small shops selling omelette, Maggi and tea which can be used as refreshment. Towards the end of the day’s trek, one can also start spotting higher peaks – of which Swargrohini is the most prominently visible.

Day 3: Juda-ka-Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (3400 m, 5 hours Trek)

The trek to the Kedarkantha basecamp is steeper than the previous day. Trekkers walk through beautiful forests before reaching a breath-taking clearing to rest before carrying on further. The base camp is also called Pukhrola and while the trek to Pukhrola may be short, there is a sudden altitude gain – so it is important to keep yourself hydrated to prevent AMS. This trail takes you through meadows like Siunn ka Thach and Mowra ka Thach which makes the challenging climb rewarding. This is also the area where the treeline starts receding slowly. From the campsite, one can also see the Kedarkantha Peak clearly which will accompany us for the rest of the trek.

Day 4: Base camp to Summit (3800 m) and back to Juda-ka-Talab

This day is a little tiring than others. On the day of the final ascent, we wake up in the wee hours of the morning, well before sunrise and begin our final journey uphill. The goal is to reach the summit by sunrise to witness such spectacular views that you’ll remember them forever! The climb to the summit is steep and tricky but not long. From the summit, as the sun slowly rises from behind the eastern horizon, you can see the higher mountains lighting up one by one. From the Kedarkantha summit, one can see many far-off peaks like Swargrohini, Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, Draupadi ka Danda, Gangotri, Jaonli and even Jorkanden!
After spending some bone freezing, but truly memorable moments at the summit, we descend and take the same route to go back to Juda ka Talab and camp for the night.

Day 5: Juda-ka-Talab to Sankri village (2 hours trek) then drive to Dehradun (Drive – 220 km, 8 Hours)

The final day includes the simple hike back to Sankri village from Juda ka Talab, from where we then drive back to Dehradun with a full heart and a few days’ worth of happy memories!
